Walking Tall
This piece is based on the Asher Avenue Drive-in in Little Rock, Arkansas. The original screen was on the flat part of the super structure behind the screen you see now. In the mid 1950's the movie industry introduced Cinemascope in an attempt to compete with television. As a result the Asher was retrofit to accommodate the bigger picture. The high water mark for the drive-in in this country came in the early 1960's. At that time there were more than 5,000 in operation in this country. Today there are fewer than 1,000, but there are signs that the drive-in is making a comeback.
